The day FDA counts your team, and your DSCSA deadline gets decided.
Most small pharmacies now have until November 2027 for the electronic part of DSCSA. But a pharmacy that grows past 25 full-time pharmacists and technicians by that day keeps the old deadline, and that's only weeks away.
Which DSCSA deadline is yours?
Count full-time (30+ hours a week) licensed pharmacists and pharmacy technicians across every store your company owns, as they'll be on November 27, 2026. Cashiers, drivers and part-timers don't count.
Exempt doesn't mean off the hook.
The extension only covers the electronic, package-level part of DSCSA. These DSCSA requirements for pharmacies apply today, whatever your deadline is.
- REQUIRED TODAY
Authorized partners only
Buy from and sell to licensed or registered partners. Check before you buy.
- REQUIRED TODAY
Get TI + TS with every purchase
Don't accept product without its transaction information and statement.
- REQUIRED TODAY
Keep records for 6 years
Paper works while you're exempt. A third party can store them under a written agreement, but you stay responsible.
- REQUIRED TODAY
Product identifier on every package
Only handle product that carries the 2D code (the one many call a QR code).
- REQUIRED TODAY
A suspect product procedure
Quarantine and investigate. If it's illegitimate, notify FDA and affected partners within 24 hours.
- REQUIRED TODAY
Answer requests in 2 business days
When FDA or your state asks for records in a recall or investigation.
It's being enforced. In April 2026, FDA sent a warning letter to a Texas medical spa it treated as a dispenser. The spa couldn't show its suppliers were authorized, and it had product without the required identifier.

The DSCSA questions pharmacies ask most.
Is November 27, 2026 the DSCSA deadline for small pharmacies?
Not for most. FDA extended the small dispenser exemption to November 27, 2027 for pharmacies with 25 or fewer full-time pharmacists and technicians on November 27, 2026. Pharmacies that grew past 25 lose the exemption that day, based on FDA's two letters.
Answered in lesson 01 →Who counts toward the 25?
Licensed pharmacists and qualified pharmacy technicians who work full time. FDA uses the IRS definition: an average of at least 30 hours a week, or 130 hours a month. You add up every store your company owns.
Answered in lesson 04 →Do I need to file anything with FDA for the exemption?
No. FDA says small dispensers don't need to submit anything. It recommends telling your trading partners, such as your wholesaler.
Answered in lesson 05 →If I'm exempt, do I have to do anything now?
Yes. The exemption covers only the electronic, package-level requirements. Buying from authorized partners, keeping transaction records for six years, handling suspect product and answering FDA within two business days already apply.
Answered in lesson 06 →Does my wholesaler handle DSCSA for me?
Partly. A wholesaler portal can receive and store your data, and a third party can keep records under a written agreement. Checking partners, handling suspect product and answering FDA stay with the pharmacy, and you remain responsible for the records.
Answered in lesson 07 →Do I have to scan every package?
No law requires it. FDA's guidance recommends confirming that the data you receive matches the product, and it allows inference for sealed cases.
Answered in lesson 10 →Will FDA extend the deadline again?
FDA hasn't said. It tied this extension to its study of small dispensers, which isn't finished, and it strongly urges small pharmacies to keep preparing. Plan for the date you have.
Answered in lesson 01 →What if I can't be ready by my deadline?
You can request a waiver or exemption from FDA through the CDER NextGen portal. FDA expects you to keep working toward compliance while it decides.
Answered in lesson 12 →Is this training really free?
Yes. Sign up and you get all 14 lessons, the interactive checklist and the printable PDF.
